About the Department
Department of Geography and Environmental Studies offer the course since the establishment of Samara University in 2008. Initially the department was offering an undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Education Degree (Teaching) in Geography and Environmental Studies. The Department has revised its curriculum as of 2009 and has been offering an undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Arts Degree (non-teaching) in Geography and Environmental Studies. The revision aimed at inculcating the changes and improvements that are happening in the discipline. In doing so, an attempt was made to include recent developments and tools of spatial analysis namely Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing technologies. In addition, environmental issues such as climate change; desertification and global warming, and environmental degradation are important issues in the revised curriculum. However, the undergraduate curriculum implemented since 2009 has undergone revision again to include newer developments, insights, principles and application in geography.
Currently, the department of Geography and Environmental Studies is running undergraduate programs in the regular, and summer education modalities. The department has also launched master’s degree program in Disaster risk management and pastoral development (DRMPD) in 2016/17.
Geography graduates work in both the teaching and non-teaching professions and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the country.
- The department of geography and Environmental Study is dedicated to providing quality education on various fields of geography and Environmental studies, which incorporate physical, human and Environmental issues in addition to the application of GIS & Remote Sensing, conduction problem solving research and community service and there by producing qualified competent and ethical graduates to foster the development aspiration of the nation.
- To be one of the leading departments with enormous fields of geography and Environmental studies in pastoral and agro-pastoral community of East Africa by 2035.
The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies offers courses in comfortable classrooms that share with other departments of the College of Social Science and Humanities. Furthermore, the Department has a well-equipped computer laboratory for practical courses such as Fundamentals of GIS and Applied GIS undertaking. It is planning to further expand the laboratory to integrate cartography and map-reading practice and a teaching laboratory.
The Department Head is selected from among the teaching staff of the department on the basis of merit and interest as soon as the college announces the vacancy for the post. The term of office of the Department Head is two years.
Currently, Mr. Yoseph Gashaye is serving as Head of the Department.
