The department of Information Technology is among the seven departments under the college of Engineering and Technology (CET) established in 2012/13 G.C.academic year with four B.Sc. and two MSc. Degree holder academic staff members. In the following academic year, it has enrolled 35 students in the regular program, with the objective of producing graduates who can effectively carry out IT related tasks, develop and compute in the field of Information Technology.

Since its establishment, the combined hard work of its academic staff has made to make higher education reachable in the region. In this endeavour, the department has opened extension program centred at Logia town.

Since its establishment, the department has been striving to realize the mission and vision of the university by acting according to the duties and responsibilities vested on it by the institution.

Currently the department has 118 students. The department has 25 academic staff, among these, 10 on study leave, one expatriate, one undergraduate and the remaining 13 are MSc holders.

The department is trying its best to be one of the main contributors of the development and growth of the university; currently some of its staff members are serving at administrative positions at college and university level Offices in addition to their regular teaching carrier.

And finally, as we got approval of MSc program curriculum in computer networking, the department is working towards MSc program intake capacity to more than 30 students in the coming academic year.

The Information Technology (IT) Department is training young generations of our country in order to empower and make them productive IT professionals that has the potential of competing on the ever-growing Digital IT world in ever step of the way and pursues their career to be one of the main actors in the IT industry to cope up with the advancement of the Digital world.

Currently, the Department is providing B.Sc. degree program in Information Technology (IT) program. In addition, the Department is also having a continuing education program that teaches B.Sc. and MSc. Degree.

The graduates of the Department have profound knowledge in basic science, mathematics, social science and the major disciplines: Information Technology, Computer Networking, Programming, Database Management, web design, application development, computer maintenance and Software Engineering.


The Information Technology (IT) Department aspires to excel in teaching, research, and industry linkage/consultancy at a national level as well as regionally and also in producing competent IT professionals within the field of Information Technology, Computer Networking, Programming, Database Management, web design, application development, computer maintenance and Software Engineering in order to solve the problem of our country and contribute their part as a productive citizen.

In order meet this visions and missions focusing on technological needs of the country is critical; specifically, in areas such as Information Technology, Computer Networking, Programming, Database Management, Web Design, Application Development, Computer Maintenance and Software Engineering.

The Department of Information Technology offers theoretical courses in comfortable four classrooms which are allocated within the College of Engineering and Technology. Furthermore, the Department has four computer laboratories for conducting practical courses.

The Department Head is selected from among the teaching staff of the department on the basis of merit among its staff members. The term of office for the Department Head is two years. The department has various active sub committees discharging their respective duties as stipulated on the universities Senate legislation.

Program Objective

General Objectives 

  • To produce high quality IT Graduate with entrepreneur and problem-solving mind set. Providing a broad knowledge and skill in information technology management
  • Providing students with the necessary skill and knowledge to configure and maintain ICT infrastructure
  • Enabling students to develop and integrate information systems
  • Building students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Enabling students to cope up new technological developments

Specific Objective:

  • To produce graduates who possess the right combination of knowledge and practical skills to take care of an organization’s technology and infrastructure needs and peoples that needs it.
  • To produce professionals that take responsibilities for selecting hardware and software products appropriate for an organization, integrating those products with organizational needs and infrastructure
  • To produce graduates who installing, customizing and maintaining applications (network installation, network administration, Web site design, development of multimedia resources, installation of communication components and oversight of email system) for the organization.
  • To produce professionals to work in organizations implementing and managing automated information systems for different scientific, educational, commercial and other purposes.
  • To produce graduates that plan and manage the technology lifecycle by which an organization’s technology is maintained, upgraded and replaced.

  • Analyze, adopt and demonstrate IT best practices, standards and their application.

  • Collaborate in teams to accomplish a common goal by integrating personal initiatives
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with clients, users and peers both verbally and in writing, using appropriate terminology.
  • Analyze the impact of technology on individuals, organizations and society, including ethical, legal and policy issues;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of best practices and standards and their application;
  • Identify and analyse user needs and take them into account in the selection, creation, evaluation and administration of computer-based systems.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements would be similar to the general institutional requirements.

Duration of the Study

  • Students will not take different computing courses at their high school study
  • The nature of the discipline needs many practical works
  • Considering the above facts, program objectives and graduate profile, under normal circumstances, four years of study are required to complete the program.

Graduation Requirements

The major graduation requirements for Regular and CEP program include:

  • Successful completion of all courses (242 ECTS);
  • A Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A) of at least 2.00;
  • A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.00 in major courses;
  • At least C grade in the Industrial Project courses;
  • No grade of “F” in any of the courses.

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Cognitive Abilities: Cognitive abilities are assessed by a combination of written examinations and continuous assessment, including marked essays, class tests and computer programming problems.
  • Practical Abilities: Practical Abilities are assessed mostly by continuous assessment. Some of practical abilities are assessed as part of group project module.
  • Transferable skills: some skills, like the use of software tools and ability to communicate orally and in written form are directly assessed, in assignments or projects, other skills are not directly assessed but their effective use will enhance the student’s overall performance.

Evaluation will be done based on the midterm exam, assignments, laboratory sessions demonstrations, Project work, and final exam and other evaluation methods.
