Samara University recognized the great Professor Donald C. Johanson for his lifetime contributions to Human Origin Research.

                   In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the famous Lucy, discovered in 1974 by Prof. Donald C. Johanson in Hadar, Afar, Samara University has named College of Social Sciences and Humanities building in honour of Prof. Donald C. Johanson, the renowned American paleoanthropologist known for his groundbreaking discovery of Lucy, in recognition for his lifetime contributions to Human Origin Research.

 

             The famous Ethiopian paleoanthropologist Prof. Yohannes Haile-Selassie inaugurated the building named after Prof. Donald Johanson together with Mohamed Usman (PhD), president of Samara University.

                           Prof. Yohannes is renowned for his remarkable discoveries of principal reference fossil for   Australopithecus garhi and Ardipithecus kadabba, and fossil specimens of Ardipithecus Ramidus, Australopithecus Afareness, and species of Homo and currently director of the Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University.

                                President of Samara University Dr. Mohammed in his speech noted that, it is a great honour to our university to name the college building after the great prof. Donald C. Johnson who introduced Ethiopia and Afar to the world and made a great contribution to the origin of the human race.

                              Prof. Yohannes Haile-Selassie on his part appreciated the warm reception and the     naming of the college building with the name of the giant scientist. He also said that , Samara University will have strong ties with Arizona State University to cooperate on joint research, knowledge transfer as well as staff and student exchanges in the future.

        He also noted the dedication of Samara University’s management to create connectivity and partnership among institutions.

           The university presented a certificate of recognition to Prof. Donald and Prof. Yohannes as further recognition for their marvelous contributions in the field of Human Origins and for their compliances to promote Ethiopia in general and afar in particular.

          Finally, the delegates visited the Redo Center for Culture and Indigenous Knowledge Studies of    Samara University.
