Initially the department were offering an undergraduate program leading to have initiated Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) programs in Statistics to meet the need for qualified statisticians in the growing socio-economic development of the country. The MOE formed clusters from all public universities and designed a relatively common and standardized curriculum of BSc. Degree program in Statistics. Statistics is the science and, arguably, also the art of learning from data. As a discipline it is concerned with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, as well as the effective communication and presentation of results replying on data. Statistics lies at the heart of the type of quantitative reasoning necessary for making important advances in the sciences, such as medicine and genetics, and for making important decisions in business and public policy.

Currently, the department statistics is running undergraduate programs in the regular. The relevance and importance of teaching science in general and Statistics in particular in teaching and research to Ethiopia is thus apparent.
