                                       About the department

The Department of History which was officially opened along with the establishment of Samara University had been a functional Unit of the Faculty of Education having various Departments.  The opening of the Department at the time was crucial in line with the urgent need of training and producing prospective Secondary School History teachers under the auspicious of strong objective of discharging its institutional responsibility and implementing the nationwide strategy of Teachers Development Program (TDP).

Up on the launching of the program, the Department envisaged two distinct programs: Regular Degree& Summer-in-Service programs. Since then, it has successfully carried out its duty of training successive batches of graduates with Bachelor of Education Degree (BED) in History in the old Curriculum; and thus, it is believed it had contributed to some extent in alleviating the acute shortage of trained man power in the field.

However, with the termination of the old Teachers Development Program, the department is basically obliged to revise its curriculum as it was accomplished long before by the same departments of other universities of the country. Accordingly, since 2012/13 with the inclusion of new courses of heritage Management relevant to the students, the graduates in the department began to be awarded with a degree called “ Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Heritage Management”. The program is interdisciplinary in its design. It comprises a core of courses in History and Historiography, Heritage management, Museum, Tourism, Archaeology, Records and Archives, and a selection of common courses drawn from different disciplines in the College of social sciences and Humanities.

The department  has been playing it own role by producing competent graduates who could  serve the region and the country at large in different sectors, conducting problem solving researches, providing community services and other related services. So far the number of graduates reaches above 300 students including this year graduates.  Currently, the department has only two regular batches with one section each and one section summer degree student.

                    Vision

  • The vision of the Ethiopian government in the area of education in higher institution is to attain quality education and training system which assures at producing competent citizens. In line with this, the Department of History and Heritage Management is to be a center of academic excellence in the field of History and Heritage Management through innovative teaching of recent perspective of History and enhance awareness of the world history in general and the nation’s history in particular with reference to human-evolution in pre-historic and historic human phenomena and their spatial variation amongst students of the discipline and allied sciences.

           Facilities and Resources of the Department

  • The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies offers courses in comfortable classrooms that it shares with other departments of the College of Social Science and Humanities. Furthermore, the department has highly qualified and experienced staff members actively involved in teaching, research and community service activities. The expertise of the staff covers areas like MA in History, Ethiopian study, African study, Archaeology and Heritage Management and Cultural Studies.

 Department’s  Head

As per the CSSH’s announcement for the head of the department candidacy, the Department Head is selected from the teaching staff based on merit and interest. The term of office of the Department Head is two years and Currently, Mr. Kedir Tahir is serving as Head of the Department.
