Program Objectives

As a Language & Literature trainer program, the Ethiopian Language(s) and Literature – Amharic program has the following objectives:

  1. Train writers and critics, public relation officers, editors and translators;
  2. Train researchers in the field of literature and human concerns;
  3. Organize and offer short-term training and workshops;

3.1 Offer short-term training on language skills and literature: (1) Report writing, and (2) Literature principles and related issues, (3) Translation.

3.2 Organize workshops on: (1) Languages study (Linguistics), and (2) Literature (editing, literary criticism etc.).

4.3 Preparation and evaluation of language curriculum

  1. Conduct Research on the various languages and literatures of Ethiopia: (1) With reference to the problems of organization and institutions, thereby give consultant service, and (2) to participate at regional and national forums

Graduate Profiles

On successful completion of the program and/or module(s) students should be able to acquire the following list of competencies as they work their way through the modules:

  1. analyse reading texts for its structure and contents;
  2. read text to assess how writers achieve their purposes with their intended audiences
  3. demonstrate ability to analyse and write for various rhetorical situations
  4. develop efficient and effective techniques for generating, organizing, drafting, and editing written texts
  5. develop oral communicative skills
  6. specify a purpose, audience, and format for a given writing and speaking tasks
  7. evaluate and edit self and others’ writing
  8. develop interpersonal communication skills
  9. develop a persuasive argument and support it with evidence and effective appeals that target (their) intended audience
  10. write an essay using multiple sources and appropriate techniques and styles
  11. write an essay with a thesis, supporting argument, introduction, and conclusion
  12. undertake translation activities
  13. demonstrate ability to translate texts from Amharic to English and vice versa
  14. understand basic linguistic principles to undertake language study;
  15. analyse reading texts and literary works for its structure and characteristic stylistic features;
  16. demonstrate ability to critically analyze and interpret literary works;
  17. master the conventions and techniques of literary criticism;
  18. understand and appreciate literary works;
  19. understand how to conduct quantitative and qualitative research
  20. collect, evaluate and interpret valid and reliable research data;
  21. Understand multilingual and multicultural issues in multilingual and multicultural countries understand basic features of Ethiopian languages.

Candidates who are eligible for the program are:

  1. Those who have successfully completed the preparatory program(in both Social & Natural Sciences) with a passing mark in Higher Education Entrance Examination, or
  2. Those who will meet the requirements of Ministry of Education for higher learning.

Graduation Requirements

Students will be eligible for graduation upon successful completion of all courses in Major, common and supportive areas. Besides, no “F” should be scored in any of the courses taken and a cumulative GPA of 2.00 is required for graduation.
